Costa del Sol

The Costa del Sol literally means coast of the sun and is a region in the south of Spain in the autonomous community of Andalusia. Consist the coastal towns and communities along the coastline of the province of Málaga. The name refers to the sunny climate that is present in the region 322 sunny days of the year. The Costa del Sol is one of the most popular holiday destinations for a holiday in Spain. Malaga is the most famous city and versatile city in the Costa del Sol and also has all the components for a successful city trip. Hip Malaga is popular under tourists for shopping in the car-free center, walking in the historic center with its beautiful monumental buildings, relaxing at the harbour or on the beach, enjoying culinary delights or visiting historical highlights such as the Moorish Alcazaba palace and Gibralfaro fortress on the hill of Malaga.

Marbella is the most famous place on the Costa del Sol and has a reputation as one of the most glamorous holiday destinations in Southern Europe. Discovered by the world's jet set in the 1960s, Marbella stands for luxurious and high-quality experiences. It's not for nothing that some of Europe's most high-quality real estate is situated here, as well as first-class golf courses and some of the world's best beach clubs.

Estepona town has had an expansion in recent years. It is now high in the list of most beautiful place on this side of the Costa del Sol. Many pedestrian-only streets are lined with white washed houses decorated with colourful geraniums. Estepona has remained true to its fishing village roots and has preserved the typical Andalusian atmosphere. The municipality stretches for more than 21 km along the Mediterranean Sea and includes some of the best and quietest beaches on the Costa del Sol. Estepona also boasts spectacular scenery, including the Los Reales mountains to the north.

The seaside town of Nerja is located in the eastern part of the Costa del Sol. Originally a charming fishing village, today a lively destination for beach holidays. Nerja's most famous attraction are the 'Caves of Nerja'; thousands of years ago the caves were the home of cavemen. In the huge caves you can view beautiful stalactites. Furthermore, from the 'Balcony of Europe' you can enjoy a magnificent view over the sheltered beaches. These beaches are also worth a visit, which, unlike the rest of the Costa del Sol, are surrounded by beautiful cliffs.

From Gibraltar you can see the southernmost spot in Europe. From the highest point of the rock El Pan de Azucar you have a breath taking view over Africa and 3 different waters: the Strait of Gibraltar, the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Visits to the beautiful cities of Granada, Seville, Córdoba and Ronda are easily accessible by car.

In Granada, the Alhambra is definitely worth a visit. The Nashriden Palace dates from the period of Moorish rule and is strategically located on a hill near Granada. The many Moorish decorations and details make the palace complex so special and you can enjoy a stroll in the green gardens around the Generalife summer palace.

The beautiful Seville is located on the river Guadalquivir and besides the Alcazar palace contains many historical highlights, such as the large cathedral, the historic centre Santa Cruz and many memories of the Ibero-American exhibition, of which the square 'Plaza de España' is the most famous.

The highlight in Cordoba is the immense Mezquita; originally a Moorish mosque, later it was converted into a cathedral. The red-striped arches give the mosque-cathedral its distinctive look. After the visit of the Mezquita, also take the effort for a city walk through the old centre of Cordoba; walk through the narrow streets of the Jewish Quarter and take a look at the Roman Bridge.

The higher town of Ronda is one of the oldest towns in Spain and is located on a plateau surrounded by ramparts. The small town breathes tranquillity, offers a magnificent panorama over the mountainous surroundings from the city walls and is best known for the hundred-meter deep 'El Tajo gorge' with the Guadelevín river, which splits the old and new part of the city of Ronda. You can cross this gorge via an impressive bridge.

Do you want to discover the real Andalusia? Be sure to visit the beautiful white villages. Frequently visited white villages are Frigiliana and Mijas. An absolute must is also to taste the real traditional Spanish dishes, such as fresh fish dishes, paella and tapas.
